HONORARY CONCH GOES TO COMMUNITY ACTIVIST NOLA ACKER

Longtime community volunteer and Tavernier resident Nola Acker recently received Honorary Conch distinction from County Commissioner Holly Raschein at a Dec. 8 Key Largo Chamber of Commerce luncheon. A member of the Key Largo Preservation Foundation, Acker was integral in bringing out some 40 volunteers to put up the 35-foot tall Christmas tree outside the Murray Nelson Government & Cultural Center. Days before her appeal on Facebook to the community, only a handful of volunteers were signed up to assist in the tree’s construction. Along with her role in putting together the tree, she’s also assisted in the annual Light Up Key Largo behind the Murray Nelson Center. Acker is a wedding planner and a legislative assistant to state Rep. Jim Mooney. She’s also a Key Largo Sunset Rotarian, where she serves as chair of the Mike Forster Scholarship Committee.
