In a tribute to front-line healthcare workers, Brazil’s iconic Cristo Redentor (“Christ the Redeemer”) statue was illuminated to look like a doctor on Easter Sunday.
Messages of thanks in various languages splashed across the monument with pictures of medical professionals suiting up to serve their communities. On the arms of the Christ were the slogans “Fique Em Cassa” (“Stay at Home”) and “Estamos Juntos” (“We are Together”).
Flags of several countries affected by coronavirus, including the United States and Italy, were projected onto the monument, which looms over the city of Rio de Janeiro as a protector.
During the tribute, city archbishop Dom Orani Tempesta performed a mass at the base of the Cristo.
Last month, the Cristo was also illuminated in international solidarity with a composite of various countries’ flags that had reported cases of the virus.
