No. 1 Monroe County has women in two of the most important elected roles. Key West re-elected Teri Johnston, its second female mayor and first openly gay female mayor in 2018. The current mayor of Monroe County is Michelle Coldiron, who formerly sat on the Marathon City Council.

135 The number of women who earned degrees from Monroe County institutions in 2017. That’s 1.21 times less than the number of men — 164 — who earned degrees in the same year. 

-10% According to the Monroe County Department of Health, women in the Keys are 10% less likely to have had a mammogram in the past year compared to the statewide average. Due to these rates falling behind the state level, the DOH has classified Monroe County’s health status as “least favorable” regarding breast cancer screenings.

4,485 As of 2012, there were almost 5,000 women-owned businesses in Monroe County. No doubt, the number has increased since then. Women represent 48.2% of the Keys population, and an estimated 60% are in the workforce, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s data from 2019.

$40 The average woman spends about $40 on makeup per month, but this can also include beauty supplies such as lotion, according to fashionistas.

5’4” In 2020, the average American woman is 5 feet 4 inches tall. Medical News Today reports that in 1914, men in America were the third-tallest in the world and women the fourth-tallest. Latvia has the tallest women — 5 feet 7 inches.

8,500 The number of men and women in Monroe County who identify as LGBT could be as high as 8,500 (11.6% of the county’s population in 2010), based on data from the

US Census and Gallup.

22.1% Alcohol Whoopsy. In 2013, 22.1% of Keys women were categorized as heavy drinkers or binge drinkers, compared to 12.2% statewide, according to the 2017 Monroe County Community Health Almanac.  

There are 27,344 women registered to vote in Monroe County. Among white women and hispanic women, their ranks are almost evenly divided between registered Republicans and Democrats. There are only 29 black women who are registered Republicans, however. 

3 The top three causes for women’s death in Monroe County: cancer (29%), heart disease (18.3%) and unintentional injury (5.1%), according to the Monroe County Health Department.
