Key West officials voted unanimously on Friday, June 26 to cancel the city’s Fourth of July fireworks and the related events that were scheduled for the Edward Knight Pier that day.
The city commission did not vote about whether to close any of the city’s beaches on July 4, and as such, as of Friday, June 26, the beaches will remain open.

“There’s no right answer on this,” Commissioner Clayton Lopez said, regretting the decision that had to be made to protect the health of Key West residents.

While some commissioners expressed confidence in residents’ respect for the city’s mask and social distancing rules, many of them said they did not believe visitors would do the same, given the behavior that’s been seen downtown in recent weeks.
