If you’re checking bags for a flight into Key West International Airport, expect a less frustrating experience retrieving them.
One of two new baggage carousels opened Tuesday, April 14 in what used to be the overcrowded, ground-floor departure area. The second new carousel is under construction and is expected to open this fall.
“Baggage Carousel A is built to handle EYW’s record-breaking growth and future capacity,” states a press release from airport spokeswoman Katie Atkins. “The first passengers to use the carousel were impressed by its efficiency after arriving on Delta flight 1281 from Atlanta, and American Airlines flight 3580 from Miami.”
New baggage service offices and rental car facilities are integrated in the space with airline support operations also located nearby.
“This is another monumental step in the Concourse A and terminal improvements program,” said Richard Strickland, Monroe County’s executive director of airports. “Coincidentally, the opening of Carousel A happened on the one-year anniversary of Concourse A opening, both elements now drastically improving the transition from aircraft to curb.”
The airport’s press release states that the new baggage area allows for better passenger flow; centralizes back-of-the-house airline equipment and support; and improves passenger efficiency.
