Save the date! On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Florida Keys SPCA is hosting Paddling 4 Pups, a fundraiser for the local animal shelter. Participants will meet up and paddle off Grassy Flats Resort and Beach Club beginning at 10 a.m., and hang around afterwards for a little beverage therapy.

“This is exactly the kind of thing we want to do at Grassy Flats,” said Matt Sexton. “We want to bring local people together to champion a local cause.”

The Marathon campus of the FKSPCA is currently fund-raising for $6,000 in needed equipment to outfit its spay and neuter trailer. The trailer has been completely rehabbed with new flooring, electrical and air conditioning.

“But we need equipment,” said shelter director Tara Vickrey-McFarland. “Items like oxygen tanks, surgical tools and sedation drugs are very costly.”

The fun starts at 10 a.m. as locals launch whatever floats — kayaks, paddleboards, etc. — for a leisurely tour of the Oceanside of Grassy Key. (This is not a race!) Well-behaved dogs are welcome to attend and organizers plan to have plenty of hydration stations for the pooches.

Tickets are $25 for those providing their own flotation, and $40 for those who wish to rent a paddleboard from oTHErside Boardsports. Please call 305-743-4800 to reserve a board as soon as possible.

The event is sponsored by the Florida Keys SPCA, Grassy Flats Resort and Beach Club, oTHErside and the Keys Weekly newspapers.
