SAY GOODBYE TO THE RUST: SOMBRERO BEACH IS GETTING A NEW PLAYGROUND

On Jan. 8, 2024, Marathon will close off the Sombrero Beach playground to begin demolition and a complete rebuild of the oceanfront attraction.

“Historically, it has been a struggle to maintain the playground at the beach because of the climate. Pieces rust and deteriorate to the point it becomes unsafe,” said Parks and Recreation Director Anthony Davis. “We’re excited about this build because we are going to be using the most innovative products that can stand the test of time and weather.”

Davis said the new playground at the beach would be very similar to the build at Rotary Park in Marathon. The playground will be reconfigured so the main climbing structure is centered, with shaded swings on the east side and other free-standing apparatus on the west side. The materials are designed and tested to hold up in oceanfront conditions:

  • The playground will feature composite decking-type material in place of wood made from recycled products like plastic milk jugs and detergent bottles.
  • Activity panels, signs and climbing apparatus feature UV-stabilized, high-density polyethylene plastic. The material is strong, textured and resists fading.
  • Steel components are primed at the weld joints and then treated with a heavy powder coat to prevent rust. Other galvanized steel tubing elements are treated with Triple Flo-Coat both inside and outside to also prevent rust.
  • The playground features UV blocking shade fabric to protect the equipment and offer visitors respite from the sun.

The playground rebuild is funded with a $245,000 grant from the Tourist Development Council. Davis said the playground is scheduled to reopen in the first week of February.
