United Way offers virtual tax assistance

Due to the COVID-19 social distancing requirements and the closure of VITA tax preparation locations, United Way of Collier and the Keys is offering virtual tax preparation for Monroe County residents with limited income and a simple tax return.

This service is limited to residents whose household income was below $56,000 in 2019 and who have income from 3 or less W-2s and 1099s only- no self-employment or investment income.  There is absolutely no charge to the taxpayer for this service.

If you meet these criteria, to participate:

  • Scan your documents with a scanner or your phone (please do not send an image; use a free app such as Adobe Scan) and email them to VITA@KeysUnitedWay.org. See KeysUnitedWay.org/VITA2020 for a complete list of required documentation. Please note, participants agree to any risk from transmitting information via email.
  • A VITA volunteer will contact you to assist in completing and filing your return. VITA volunteer tax preparers are IRS-certified.  This virtual option has been designed by local volunteers and is approved by the IRS. The program may be adapted as needed.

There are additional options for free tax preparation:

  • If you have a simple return, you can prepare your own taxes safely, conveniently and FREE online at MyFreeTaxes.com, which is available in multiple languages.  United Way partners with industry leader H&R Block to provide this service.
  • Once social distancing requirements are lifted, we hope to re-open our VITA tax preparation sites throughout Monroe County, in light of the extended July 15 filing deadline.
