‘WE WON’T GO BACK’ WOMEN’S MARCH SET FOR AUG. 21 IN KEY WEST

Key West will join the surge of peaceful demonstrations taking place nationally to protest the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, which federally protected abortion rights in all states. The court’s move in June instead leaves abortion legislation in the hands of state legislators.

Key West’s “We Won’t Go Back” march will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21. The demonstration will start at Nelson English Park, next to the Martin Luther King Community Pool, then march on Duval Street to Truman Waterfront Park.

Speakers will include community members who are committed to bodily autonomy and equal treatment for all people, said organizer Jessica Webb.

“Stand together with us in support of women’s, LGBTQ+ and trans rights,” she said. “Meet community members committed to bodily autonomy and equal treatment for all people. Residents and supportive local representatives alike will be in attendance. This is a family- friendly event and the whole community is encouraged to participate.”

“Hell no, we want Roe,” Webb posted on the event’s Facebook page. “Right now women and the LGBTQ+ communities are personally under attack. Our rights are being stripped away from us without a blink of the eye with NO regard for our wants, needs, freedom and lives.

Right now, thousands of women are scared for their life because their body cannot support a pregnancy. Right now the LGBTQ+ communities (and their parents/guardians) are being threatened with a felony  by choosing to identify with love, rather than someone else’s expectations. Right now, women and men that are childless are being threatened with a tax increase. Right now birth control and contraceptives are on the chopping block. Right now, guns have more rights in America than women and LGBTQ+. The Supreme Court wants to go back 50 years, but we are here to say, ‘We won’t go back.’ We are here to stand up for ourselves and show support for others because everyone deserves to be treated equally. …

Key West is known for its tight knit community and now more than ever, we need to come together in solidarity to let the Supreme Court know we will not just lie back and take this. We will stand and fight for equal rights for all as One Human Family.”
