The Florida Keys Electric Cooperative recently started work to move underground facilities to accommodate the pedestrian bridge at Founders Park. Crews have been working between U.S. 1 and Old Highway near the park to relocate underground ductwork and a conductor off of the Florida Department of Transportation’s right-of-way onto village property. Above-ground stainless enclosures will be required at each end of the project. Estimated costs are between $700,000 and $800,000. Crews were also spotted relocating overhead utilities that are currently in the way of the $4.68-million pedestrian bridge. Florida Department of Transportation officials say final plans are under review with installation of piles for the foundation anticipated by the end of year. DAVID GROSS/Keys Weekly
