DRIVE IT LIKE A RENTAL: COPS FIND $27K CASH & DRUGS AFTER HIGHWAY CHASE

Monroe County sheriff’s deputies say they found $27,000 in cash in a car whose driver fled from police, first in the car, then on foot. An assortment of drugs also was found. CONTRIBUTED

A Cape Coral man was arrested Nov. 19, and more than $27,000 cash was found in his vehicle, police say, along with drugs, after the man fled from the Monroe County sheriff’s deputies and Florida Highway Patrol officers.

Odelin Regis, 25, was charged with DUI, fleeing and eluding, and multiple traffic violations, including reckless driving. It is unclear why Regis’ list of charges on the sheriff’s office website at keysso.net does not include felony drug charges, as they found 3.3 grams of cocaine and 2.8 ounces of marijuana, in addition to the cash, according to a report from the sheriff’s office.

Additionally, Regis’ mugshot was not posted on the sheriff’s office website. As of 6 p.m. on Nov. 20, his name, arrest location and non-drug-related charges appeared without a photo.

Around noon on Nov. 19, deputies saw a Corvette heading north from MM 35 at more than 100 mph. The sheriff’s office received numerous 911 calls from other drivers about the Corvette’s speed and maneuvers as Regis fled from the sheriff’s office and FHP. He failed to stop despite multiple attempts by both agencies.

Law enforcement ultimately spiked the Corvette’s tires at the Channel 2 Bridge. The car was later determined to be a rental.

The car stopped near MM 74, but the driver, Regis, then ran away. He was caught and arrested shortly thereafter. A female passenger in the vehicle was not arrested.

Regis was taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier and then transported to a Miami hospital due to the fact that he ingested pills and cocaine while fleeing, police say. His condition on Nov. 20 was not immediately clear.

A loaded .45-caliber handgun was found near the Channel 2 Bridge after Regis was taken into custody. Authorities are still investigating whether Regis disposed of that firearm while he was fleeing.

In May 2023, Sarasota County deputies charged Regis with fleeing and eluding, multiple traffic violations and failure to appear in court for prior drug charges.
