FORMER ISLAMORADA PARAMEDIC ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY STEALING FENTANYL, FALSIFYING RECORDS

A 45-year-old Key Largo man formerly employed with the Islamorada Fire Rescue Department as a firefighter/paramedic was arrested on Wednesday after he allegedly took fentanyl from an ambulance and falsified public records.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Brian Keith Burt is facing charges of grand theft of a controlled substance and fraud.

Per a sheriff’s office report on Wednesday, Islamorada fire officials notified the sheriff’s office on March 2 that Burt obtained a partially used vial of fentanyl from an ambulance after a medical call and forged another paramedic’s signature in documents related to the disposal of the drug.

Other crew members noticed discrepancies in the documentation related to the drug’s use after the call. Warrants were issued for Burt’s arrest and he was booked into jail on Wednesday.

Village officials declined comment to the Keys Weekly on the matter at this time.
