The meet against Coral Shores High School takes place in the Marathon High School weight room.

Marathon High took on the Hurricanes of Coral Shores in a fun and competitive meet on Nov. 1 in the Marathon High School weight room.

Coral Shores, coached by Erin King, traveled to Marathon with a roster of 12 athletes in its inaugural season to take on the Lady Fins. Marathon has fielded a team for the past four years, often having to travel to Miami and Fort Lauderdale to find competition. “It’s great to have some competition closer to home,” said Marathon Coach Jesse Schubert.

Marathon’s team carries a roster of 21 girls ranging from ninth to 12th grade and a strong group of eighth-graders practicing for a shot on the team next year. With half the team brand-new to weightlifting, Schubert said, “The leadership of seniors Oriana Mendez, Hannah Ziels and Rachel Lebo has been great. I’m very proud of how the older girls are stepping up and the young girls are willing to listen and learn.”

Assistant coach and school trainer Luis Leal watches Oriana Mendez warm up. Oriana placed 7th in the state last season.
