We at Keys Weekly have for a long time considered how to best honor the men and women serving in the military. With the help and advice of our community members in the armed forces, we’re thrilled to present our Military Spotlight.

Why did you join the military? I joined the military to make a difference in the lives of others. I specifically joined the Coast Guard because of the diversity of the missions we perform.

How many years have you been in the military? I attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy for four years, and have been stationed in Key West for almost two years.

Had you ever been to the Florida Keys/Key West before your current assignment? I had visited Islamorada once and went out on a fishing charter.

Did you choose Key West or were you just assigned here? Key West was at the very top of my assignment requests.

What were your first thoughts upon learning that you were coming to the Keys? I was beyond excited to move to Key West. It was a surreal feeling. My twin sister, who also is in the Coast Guard, received an assignment to Key West as well. We did not plan on getting stationed together, but were extremely excited and could not believe it.

Hobbies? I like fishing, going to spin class at Bodyzone Fitness and playing volleyball.

Favorite things to do? One of my favorite things to do is play beach volleyball at Higgs Beach in Key West.

Have you been here for a Fantasy Fest? If so, did you attend and what were your initial thoughts?  I attended Fantasy Fest my first year stationed here and it was a bit of a shock. I only participated in the Zombie Bike Ride and Tutu Tuesday. Both events were a ton of fun.

What do you like most about the Florida Keys? The weather is my absolute favorite thing about the Keys.

What do you like most about your assignment here? My fellow crew members are some of the best people I have ever met in my life. I am honored to work with them every day.

If you had the power to change one thing about life in Key West what would you change? I’d lower the price of groceries.
