The massive new Wreckers Cay apartment compound is taking shape on Stock Island, where contractors and developers celebrated a roof-topping milestone last week and thanked the crews for their hard work.
Key West City Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover was present, along with County Commissioners Craig Cates and Michelle Coldiron and U.S. Rep. Carlo Gimenez’s legislative aide Nicole Rapanos.
The eight-building compound of 280 units will all be deed-restricted as affordable at varying income levels. The new development will include 96 one-bedroom units, 160 two-bedroom units and 24 three-bedroom units.
Mike Marino of Marino Construction estimated the first building will be open by June, with others to follow in August, although current material supply shortages make completion estimates difficult.
Residents who were displaced from the former trailer park on the property will have priority for the units, which will then be leased to qualified applicants.
