Hundreds trekked Jewfish Creek Bridge — the gateway into the Florida Keys — during last year’s First State Bank Key Largo Bridge Run presented by the Keys Weekly Newspapers.

One of the signature events in the Upper Keys also helped raise thousands of dollars to support local youth.

On July 14, race organizer Henry Menendez presented the Florida Keys Children’s Shelter staff with a $10,000 check to help provide life-changing support for children and families in crisis. Located in Tavernier, the facility provides safe shelter, counseling and community-based services that help build bright futures while strengthening families.

Menendez, who toured the facility following the presentation, said he was amazed by the space and services offered to children in need of a safe place to stay.

“Donating the Bridge Run proceeds to the shelter just made the most sense with their commitment to helping the children in our community,” Menendez said.

Since 1985, the shelter’s residential and community-based programs have supported thousands of children and families throughout the Florida Keys. Staff aim to provide thoughtful, effective care for children who have experienced abuse, abandonment, neglect, family conflict or crisis. Whether a child needs short-term shelter, counseling, guidance or family support services, the shelter is there with solutions that restore confidence and create brighter futures.

“We’re very appreciative of the generosity of the Bridge Run, Menendez and everyone involved in the event,” said Ben Kemmer, CEO for the children’s shelter. “It’s just another example of Henry’s commitment to the community and youth we serve. And as always, we are definitely grateful to be part of such a caring and supportive community.”

A timed 10k and 5k, the 15th annual Key Largo Bridge Run returns Saturday, Dec. 5. Runners and walkers can challenge their best times while enjoying a relatively flat course overlooking Florida Bay and Barnes Sound. More information is at keylargobridgerun.com.
