From the nurse and the grocer to the teacher and landscaper, the Upper Keys community can’t thrive without the skills and talents of local workers who serve, produce, repair, research, advocate for, fundraise or build. We like to call them the “Mile Makers.”

The first “Mile Maker” of 2025 is Gwendolyn Boggess, owner of Mermaids Mane Beauty Bar in Key Largo. A master hair stylist and colorist, Boggess’ interest in hair styling began at 16 as an assistant at Hair in the Tropics salon.

How long have you lived in the Florida Keys? I have been home for two years, but the Keys have always been a special part of my life. Growing up with my cousins, I was down here every summer and weekend. I also worked down here most of my life.

When did you first know you would become a hairstylist? I have always been interested in hair. My mom says she knew when I received a “My Size Barbie” and chopped her hair off. I would say when I became a shampoo girl, watching all of the transformations really motivated me. Seeing big color transformations always amazed me. So did the color wheel.

What was your path to become a hairstylist? When I was 16, I spent the summer at my sister Annette’s house, and the salon she went to was hiring for an assistant.

When did you first know you would open your own business in your hometown? I always wanted my own salon here in the Florida Keys. My clients really liked my personality, skill and knowledge in hair. I am very much an “introverted extrovert,” so being able to have a salon dedicated to just my clients really helps work not seem so much like work. I love making my clients feel at home and comfortable in my space.

What was your path to become an entrepreneur? I come from a long list of small business owners. From working at my dad’s produce stand to working the gear cage at Captain Slate’s Dive Shop, I was taught at a very early age what hard work is. I love being able to come to my own salon every day, taking care of my customers, ordering products and doing my own bookkeeping. I feel I was always meant to be my own boss.

What is the most valuable quality that has been useful to you? I think my character speaks for itself. I know how to put a smile on almost anyone’s face with my silly personality. I really know how to talk to people and make them feel comfortable around me.

What would people be surprised to find out about your job? A lot of the money I make goes to rent, product, taxes and education.

Do you think it’s more difficult to cut and style hair, than say, 50 years ago, or is it about the same, or easier? I definitely think it is easier due to so much new technology and free education. I learn something new every day, just drinking my coffee and watching my favorite educators on Instagram, but, like anything, you have to practice and learn every day to be good at something.

What is the best part of what you do? The best part is making someone feel good about themselves. Seeing their smile is the best tip I can get. Also, using my creativity to create something beautiful.

What would you recommend to someone interested in becoming a hairstylist? I would recommend practicing every chance you get, continuing your education and figuring out what you really like doing to find your target market.
