To ensure that all Monroe County School District students can receive a free lunch and breakfast to-go, the district has expanded the number of locations it is available. In addition to the 11 permanent sites previously reported (see bottom list), it has started delivering the lunches to “mobile” sites at specific times.
“Our school principals were telling us that many families couldn’t come to pick up a meal,” said Superintendent Mark Porter. “And we said, ‘If that’s the case, we’ll take it to them.’”
Now in its second week, the rules guiding the lunch program have relaxed. Students do not need to pick up from “their school” site, but can pick up anywhere in the county. And parents and students need not be together to receive the free food — kids can pick up their own food, and parents can pick up for their child.
“With students now in online learning, it wasn’t always possible for the students to ride along with the parents to pick up lunch,” Porter said.
