The Basilica School of Saint Mary Star of the Sea recently announced its receipt from the Florida Department of Education of a Purple Star School designation. The Purple Star School of Distinction designation recognizes Florida schools that support the unique needs of military families, help military-connected students navigate challenges and provide resources for military-connected students when transitioning to a new school environment.

Frequent moves, deployments and unpredictable schedules can create obstacles to receiving an education.

Families relocating to Key West for military duty are eligible to receive priority enrollment, transition and academic planning assistance, and student-led transition program which connects new military students with student government representatives and other children of service members. The school also seeks to publicly recognize its military servicemembers and their families on the campus with events that include Purple Up Day, Service Member Story Time, and by celebrating the month of the military child in April.
