Frita’s Cuban Burger Cafe once again presents the Cuban Sandwich Throwdown on Saturday,

April 27 at the Green Parrot Bar from noon to 3 p.m.

Twelve contestants have signed on for this year’s competition, which features a panel of “local celebrity” judges. Everyone in the bar that day can also partake in the judging for a $20 donation, which will provide each person with 12 sandwiches to blind taste test.

The audience will select the People’s Choice Award winner while the judges will determine first, second and third place.

Marcia Weaver, owner of Frita’s Cuban Burger Cafe, created the throwdown three years ago as a fundraiser for the Learning Center of Key West preschool.

This year’s panel of judges includes Rafael Peñalver of the San Carlos Institute, County Commissioner Craig Cates, Key West City Commissioner Clayton Lopez, former Key West Police Chief Donie Lee, Keys Weekly editor Mandy Miles, Keys Weekly digital editor Gwen Filosa, rum distiller and entrepreneur Paul Menta and Capt. Ted Lund.

“It’s the tastiest contest in town at the iconic Green Parrot Bar, and it’s all for a good cause,” Weaver said. Stop at Frita’s, 425 Southard St., or call 305-509-7075 for advance tickets or get them at the door the day of the event.
