From Easter egg hunts to brunches and beer hunts, there’s no shortage of events happening leading up to the holiday. Here’s a list of some of the happenings going on throughout the area.

Saturday, April 20

Spring Fest at Founders

The Islamorada Village Islands Parks & Recreation presents Spring Fest on Saturday, April 20, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Founders Park great lawn and fields. Admission is free. There will be an Easter egg hunt for those 12 and under. Children will be split up into age groups, including an infant area. Pictures with the spring bunny begin at 9:30 a.m. and the egg hunt begins at 11:30 a.m. Each age group will have one golden egg with a special prize awarded. Other kids activities include a bounce house, face painting, kid’s coloring area, and a bunny “hopstacle” course. Sno-cones and popcorn will be available for purchase. Third Annual Easter Beer Hunt

Islamorada Beer Company will host its third annual Easter Beer Hunt at Islamorada Brewery & Distillery, MM 82.2, Oceanside. The event, which goes from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., will feature a beer hunt every hour and candy hunts for kids. There will be more than 100 to find and take home as well as special prize eggs. KJCC Community Passover Second Seder

The Keys Jewish Community Center will hold its annual Community Passover Second Seder at 6:30 p.m. at Islamorada Fishing Club, 104 Madeira Road. Tickets are $54 for adults and $25 for children. For more information and reservations, call Beth Hayden at 305-773-0067.

Underwater Easter Egg Hunt

Divers and snorkelers can become a deep sea “egg-splorer” while supporting a Keys charity during the 2019 Underwater Easter Egg Hunt. The unique Easter “egg-stravaganza” is hosted by Captain “Cottontail” Spencer Slate. Interested divers can join the morning excursion with Captain Slate’s Scuba Adventures, located at MM 90.7, Oceanside, in Tavernier. The two-tank trip is specially priced at $85 per certified diver including tanks and weights, $35 per adult snorkeler and $25 per child snorkeler under age 13 (including gear). Divers and snorkelers are asked to check in at 8 a.m. and boats are scheduled to depart at 8:30 a.m. Participants must pre-register for the event. Money raised during the annual undersea hunt benefits Kids In Special Situations, providing the area’s needy children gifts and holiday cheer throughout the year. Easter Sunrise

Join the Upper Keys community at the best service of the year — Easter sunrise. Meet at Harry Harris Park at MM 93 at 6:30 a.m. for an amazing service. See the sunrise and hear the story of God’s gift. Bring a chair and a friend.

Easter Festival at Burton Memorial Church

Burton Memorial Church will host its Easter Festival from noon to 2 p.m. There will be food, drinks, music, prizes and the largest Easter egg hunt in the Upper Keys. There is no charge for the Easter egg hunt or prizes. Bring your appetite, bring your children and bring your Easter baskets to celebrate with us. For more information, call 305-852-2581.

Brunch at the Islander

The Islander Resort, located at MM 82.1 in Islamorada, will have an Easter Brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Enjoy bottomless mimosas, champagne and poinsettia cocktails and delicious menu items. From 10 a.m. to noon, there will be photos by Jannette De Llanos with the Easter Bunny. The first annual Easter eggs hunt will commence at 10 a.m. The brunch is $49.95 per person and $12.95 for those 12 and under. Jim McCarthy
Jim McCarthy is one of the many Western New Yorkers who escaped the snow and frigid temperatures for warm living by the water. A former crime & court reporter and city editor for two Western New York newspapers, Jim has been honing his craft since he graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 2014. In his 4-plus years in the Keys, Jim has enjoyed connecting with the community. “One of my college professors would always preach to be curious,” he said. “Behind every person is a story that’s unique to them, and one worth telling. As writers, we are the ones who paint the pictures in the readers minds of the emotions, the struggles and the triumphs.” Jim is past president of the Key Largo Sunset Rotary Club, which is composed of energetic members who serve the community’s youth and older populations. Jim is a sports fanatic who loves to watch football, hockey, mixed martial arts and golf. He also enjoys time with family and his new baby boy, Lucas, who arrived Oct. 4, 2022.
