On Saturday, Dec. 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Old Island Restoration Foundation and Key West Collegiate Academy will host the eighth annual community gingerbread house making party in the garden of The Oldest House at 322 Duval Street in Key West.

“Its is an excellent family event on Duval Street. There is a great garden for the kids to get make gingerbread houses. Hundreds come of every age. Some of the kids do a great job decorating,” said OIRF Treasurer and Board Member Steve Black.

Kids of all ages are invited to attend this fun and free event. Each person attending is encouraged to bring edible items for house building and decorations, like gumdrops, candy canes or cookies to share. There will be tables full of house building and decorating supplies to create any gingerbread house that can be imagined. Every one attending will take home their gingerbread creations for a festive addition to holiday celebrations.

Participants are encouraged to use imagination in choosing items to bring for house building and decorations, with the only rule being that it must be edible. For example, Necco wafers make great roof tiles, and shredded wheat cereal can make a thatched roof. Shredded coconut can be used for snow, marshmallows for snowmen, sugar cones for trees, and candies of all sorts for, well, all sorts of things.

Bring the family, enjoy the holiday music and create your gingerbread memories. Light refreshments will also be provided. The Oldest House is located on Duval Street, between Eaton and Caroline Streets.

This wildly popular holiday event is generously underwritten by The Smith Law Firm. Several other community businesses and supporters, including Joel Meisel, Daniel E. Skahen of Preferred Properties, Jimmy Weekly, Fausto’s Food Palace, Conch Color, Key West Citizen, Mangoes Restaurant, The Restaurant Store, Cole’z Peace, Sheri L. Lohr of Sea Story Press, Audio Video In Paradise and Four Star Rentals have generously contributed to bring this special holiday event to the community, which promises to be an unforgettable holiday experience.
