A new program at Williams Hall will give Key West middle and high school students the opportunity to learn the world of theater from local artists – both onstage and behind the scenes.
The Williams Hall Conservatory of Theatre Arts launches its fall semester in early October, offering students in grades 6-12 classes in acting, improvisation and stage technology. The program is designed to move beyond traditional classroom instruction, giving students practical experience in the collaborative process of theater education and the elements of putting on a production.
Classes will be taught by members of Key West’s theater community, including Cassidy Timms, who will lead acting; Susannah Wells, who will teach improv; and Brandon Beach, who will instruct stage tech. The conservatory is designed by program director Emily Young Galvan and artistic director Jeremy Zoma.
Students will work in an ensemble-based environment that intends to teach performance and technical skills while developing confidence, discipline, communication and problem-solving abilities.
“Theater teaches young people how to communicate, build self-confidence and work together toward something bigger than themselves in a safe, creative and inclusive environment,” said Young Galvan, program director.
“The conservatory is our investment in the future of the arts in Key West,” said Michael Marrero, executive director of Williams Hall. “By connecting students with working theater professionals and giving them meaningful, hands-on experience, we’re creating a space where young people can grow, take creative risks and discover what’s possible. We’re excited to help nurture the next generation of theater artists and storytellers in the Florida Keys.”
Fall classes begin Oct. 5 at Williams Hall, 729 Fleming St. The six-week fall semester runs through Nov. 17. Acting and improv will meet Mondays from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m., while stage tech will meet Tuesdays from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m.
Tuition is $225 for registrations from Sept. 16-30, or until classes are full. Financial assistance is available.
