State Rep. Jim Mooney and Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez took a tour of Marathon on Sept. 9, showering Middle Keys governments and nonprofits with cash as they celebrated the success of recent legislative appropriations. The representative-sponsored initiatives were among millions of dollars bestowed to the Keys in the most recent state budget, including:
- $475,000 for water reclamation facility improvements in Key Colony Beach.
- $2.5 million for the city of Marathon’s deep wastewater injection well project.
- $750,000 for the Florida Keys Habitat for Humanity.
- $950,000 to support pediatric health and dental care with Keys AHEC.
Total legislative appropriations within Mooney and Rodriguez’s districts totaled more than $63.1 million, according to figures provided to the Keys Weekly, including preserving the annual $20 million Florida Keys Stewardship Act.
