HOPPY EASTER: WAYS TO CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND IN MARATHON

From sunrise oceanside services to traditional masses in the pews, Marathon has a range of offerings as residents and visitors prepare to celebrate Easter Sunday on March 31. Whether you’re looking to entertain some little ones or just trying to relax with friends and family, be sure to visit one of the many restaurants and businesses with special events and food on deck for this holiday weekend.

Celebrate Easter, on the beach or in the pews:

  • All are invited to the community sunrise service, held at 7 a.m. at Sombrero Beach on Easter Sunday. Attendees should bring chairs or blankets.
  • St. Columba Episcopal Church will host a Good Friday service at noon on Friday, March 29, an Easter Vigil service at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 30 and Easter Sunday services at 9 (traditional service) and 11 a.m. (contemporary service). 
  • Kirk of the Keys will hold a contemporary worship service at 9 a.m. with traditional worship at 11 a.m. on Easter Sunday. An egg hunt for children will take place between the services. 
  • The Marathon Community Church will hold a Good Friday service on Friday, March 29 at 5:30 p.m. and an Easter worship service in the sanctuary at 3010 Overseas Highway on Easter Sunday at 11 a.m.
  • San Pablo Catholic Church will hold a Holy Thursday mass on Thursday, March 28 at 6 p.m. There will be a Liturgy of Good Friday on March 29 at noon and 6 p.m. An Easter Vigil mass is scheduled for Saturday at 8 p.m. On Easter Sunday, the church will celebrate mass at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. with a Spanish mass at noon. A Blessing of the Easter Baskets will take place Saturday at 11 a.m. 
  • Pastor Larry White of St. Paul AME Church will lead a Relay for Christ starting at 8 a.m. on Friday, March 29 at San Pablo Catholic Church. Walkers are invited to join him as he carries a cross through Marathon praying for churches and the community. For more information, call 786-554-1285.

Complete the festivities:

  • The Marathon Rotary Club will host its annual Easter egg hunt at the new Marathon Rotary Park on Saturday, March 30 at 10 a.m. The Easter bunny will be present for photos as kids hunt for thousands of eggs.
  • Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters will hold its annual Easter egg hunt for children ages 12 and under on Saturday, March 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. The hunt is free with general admission and offers chances to win candy, toys, food coins and encounter vouchers.
  • The Lighthouse Grill will host its Easter brunch buffet on Easter Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Easter Bunny will stop by as guests enjoy lawn games, live music and activity tables.   • Isla Bella Beach Resort’s on-site restaurant Mahina will offer an Easter brunch buffet at Town Square. Diners can enjoy a salad station, a cheese and charcuterie display, an eggs station, carved-to-order pork chop and steamship round of beef and other main dishes.   • St. Columba Episcopal Church will host its $5 bag sale “under the abbey” for clothes, shoes, housewares and more on Saturday, March 30 at 8 a.m. Shoppers can fill a bag for just $5. Attendees can join an Easter egg hunt starting at 10:30 a.m. that includes a free basket.
  • Butterfly Cafe at Tranquility Bay Beachfront Resort will feature a special menu for Easter dinner on Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. Menu highlights include filet mignon, scallop risotto, herb roast lamb chop and Easter ham, among 14 other starters and entrees.   • Sunset Grill & Raw Bar will host its 14th annual Easter Egg-Stravaganza with an all-day barbecue and pool and beach party on Easter Sunday. The Easter Bunny will pay a visit as the restaurant hosts a kids Easter egg hunt at 2 p.m. with poolside games, prizes and a bounce house. DJ Trae Dae will provide the jams from 1 to 5 p.m.
  • The Lagoon on Grassy Key will host a day of Easter special events, beginning with an egg hunt at 10 a.m. on Easter Sunday. At 2 p.m. the same day, the lagoon’s aquapark will host a “rabbit run,” and Bongos Botanical Beer Garden will serve special “Peeptini” and “Drunken Bunny” drinks. Just down the road, The Rhum House at Grassy Flats Resort will serve a special Easter brunch menu.

Alex Rickert made the perfectly natural career progression from dolphin trainer to newspaper editor in 2021 after freelancing for Keys Weekly while working full time at Dolphin Research Center. A resident of Marathon since 2015, he fell in love with the Florida Keys community by helping multiple organizations and friends rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Irma.
