No matter how many individuals appear in the pages of each edition of Keys Weekly, there are always so many more of our community members who deserve to be recognized. In an effort to shine a spotlight on more of the incredible individuals who live and work in these islands, Keys Weekly is proud to present our Neighbor of the Week feature, dedicated to celebrating a community member with each issue.
Our neighbor of the week is MP Coleman-Sayer, who teaches sixth grade math and coaches the varsity boys and girls golf teams. With strong community support, she revitalized the MHS golf program, which was inspired by her two sons, Fisher and Cullen. Outside the classroom, she enjoys playing golf and pickleball, fishing, traveling, watching sports as a former college basketball player and spending time with her family, dogs and friends.
How long have you been in the Keys and what brought you here? I have lived here for 25 years and I was transplanted due to a relationship.
What is your favorite thing about living in the Keys? The fresh air, sunrises, sunsets and easy access to being on the water or at the beach.
What is the funniest question one of your students has asked you? They ask me a lot of questions, but I always get the question, “Do you have a favorite student?” Of course I always chuckle at it. My response is “THERE ARE NO FAVORITES!”
If you were a type of candy, what would you be and why? I would say a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup because they are soft in the center but the edges might give people a “don’t mess with me” feel. Plus the sweet-but-a-little-salty combo.
What is your greatest extravagance? Unfortunately, it is sneakers. I truly have a hard time passing up a great pair.
What’s a talent you wish you had? I really wish I could make balloon animals.
What is your most treasured possession? A $2 bill that my grandmother gave me that was printed the year I was born. I carry it with me most of the time.
What do you most value in your friends? Loyalty, honesty and a good sense of humor. I value people who show up for the good, the bad and the ugly, not just for one reason.
If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A dolphin because I am somewhat social, playful, loyal, independent and happiest near the water, whether I’m on the beach or on the boat. However, I have always said that if there is reincarnation, I want to come back as one of my dogs because they live the best life ever.
What’s a habit you’d love to break? Overthinking! Especially the things that should just get the response, “it is what it is.”
What is the last book you read that inspired you? I’m currently reading “The Let Them Theory” by Mel Robbins. It is very insightful and has already been an inspiration.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? There are too many to choose from! Most people see the strong, determined and independent side of me, but deep down I do enjoy a good adventure and have a soft side.
