KEYS LOBSTER MINI-SEASON SHUTS LOCAL RAMPS & SUSPENDS ROLLING LANE CLOSURE

Crews have replaced 10,055 feet of the new main since mid-July. FKAA/Contributed

The Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority (FKAA) announced that the southbound U.S. 1 rolling lane closure is suspended through July 30 for the lobster mini-season.

A rolling lane closure means that sections of U.S. 1 are closed in 1,000- to 1,500-feet increments while crews install the new transmission main. However a northbound and southbound lane will always remain open. While traveling through the work zone, motorists should stay vigilant and abide by the 35 MPH speed limit.

As of July 14, 10,055 feet of the new main has been installed. The Islamorada Transmission Main Replacement Project is estimated to be completed by February 2025, however traffic impacts will lessen by March 2024. Work will halt for major holidays and events.

BOAT RAMPS AT EAST RIDGE & BLACKWOOD CLOSED TO BOAT LAUNCHING

The public boat ramps at East Ridge Road and Blackwood Drive will be closed to boat launching from 8 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26 through 8 a.m. on Friday, July 28. The barriers used to close the ramps to boats do allow access for kayaks and paddleboards. The Islamorada Village Council agreed upon the closures of the residential neighborhood boat ramps beginning in 2021 to minimize negative impacts on village residents during lobster mini season and crowded holiday weekends.

The boat ramp at the Plantation Yacht Harbor Marina at Founders Park will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the holiday weekend. Non-resident fees are $20 each way ($40 round trip.) When the trailer parking lot is full, restrictions will apply.

Visitors are also encouraged to support the local economy by using private marina facilities. Please be reminded that the water access point on Indian Key remains closed for repairs.
