Keys runners headed north to Boca Raton’s South County Regional Park on Sept. 18 for the 44th annual Spanish River Invitational, a race that gave local athletes more than an opportunity to test themselves against a massive field. The meet also offered a valuable preview of the course they will see again in the postseason. Regional competition will be held there in November, and Marathon’s 1A district race will take place on the same course this season.
Marathon’s Lucian Burns made the most of the preview, racing to second place overall in a boys field of nearly 400 runners. Burns crossed the line in 16:18, a time fast enough to earn a Silver Standard Elite Performance under MileSplit’s national performance standards.
The Dolphins backed Burns’ runner-up performance with enough depth to place sixth as a team among 37 Class 1A and 2A programs. Allan Taylor was second across the line for Marathon, finishing 34th overall in 17:51. Eighth-grader Anthony Vargas broke into the top 100 with a 19:09, followed by Landon Anderson in 20:00 and Brayden Anderson in 20:49.
Key West was led by Sawyer Hill, who also cracked the top 100. Hill placed 87th overall and was first across the line for the Conchs in 18:53. Alejandro Caridad finished in 19:35, followed by Colin Palomino in 20:58 and Everett Ward in 21:21. Noah Taylor was just seconds behind Ward, finishing in 21:24 to complete Key West’s top five.
Victor Lopez led the Hurricanes, clocking a 19:25 for Coral Shores. Wyatt Meyers was next in 19:45, followed by Tristan Sanchez in 20:27, Dillon Matthews in 21:35 and Tyler Cope in 23:35.
In the girls race, Coral Shores’ Ali Wheatley led all Keys competitors with an impressive 12th-place finish. Wheatley completed the course in 20:12.
Aria Booton and Hayden Teal finished nearly side-by-side for the Hurricanes, clocking 25:21.11 and 25:21.37, respectively. Kiri Crockett and Eloise Carter were similarly close at the finish, crossing in 27:01.03 and 27:01.93 to round out Coral Shores’ top five.
Marathon placed three runners in the top 100, led by eighth grader Molly Joly, who finished 23rd overall in 20:42. Rebecca Merryman claimed 84th place in 23:38, while Ariella Dworniczak was 96th in 24:09. A pair of sixth graders completed the Dolphins’ scoring five, with June McKnight finishing in 28:02 and Ava D’Ascanio in 31:24.
The Lady Conchs placed two runners among the top 100. Violet Jangraw led Key West with a 46th-place finish in 22:03, while Hazel Matarazzo took 70th in 23:10. Emma Bradshaw and Ryah Bushey crossed just fractions of a second apart in 25:16.05 and 25:16.34, respectively, and Svetlana Snipes completed the Conchs’ top five in 28:03.
With postseason races looming later this fall, the Spanish River Invitational offered Keys runners an early look at the terrain they will need to master when the stakes are considerably higher later this fall.
