MARATHON WEEKLY FEATURES SPECIAL STUDENT, ATHLETE: Kayla Sipe

Kayla Sipe / Weightlifting / Junior

What do you enjoy about weightlifting? I enjoy the fight to be better than your last lift. I also enjoy how much all the girls, no matter what  school you’re from, always support and cheer for each other. It’s a really great feeling.

How long have you been part of the weightlifting team? This is my second year on the team. I joined to get stronger for other sports and ended up really loving the sport and so I have stuck with it.

Describe one of your best moments in athletics. This entire season has been filled with best moments. Every week at each meet I have worked hard pushing 5 pounds better than the last. In November I was maxing 65 pounds at clean-and-jerk and 60 pounds on bench. I have put in a lot of work and I am now at 100 pounds  on clean-and-jerk and 80 on bench in just two months.

Coach Schubert says… “Just breathe.” Schubert always has encouraging words, but these are some of the most important ones. It determines how well you will do, and keeps you focused on what you need to get done.
