MARATHON’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:Mathias Trujillo

What do you enjoy about being on the soccer team? What I enjoy most about soccer is being in the field with my team and being able to forget about all of my problems and just have fun doing the thing that I love.

How long have you been playing on the team? I have been playing soccer for as long as I remember, ever since I was little. I was always kicking a ball. Almost all my family members play and so it really encouraged me to play, too. I started on the JV team at MHS right after arriving in the U.S. in seventh grade.

Describe one of your best moments in athletics. The best moment I’ve had was winning a district championship for the first time in MHS soccer history and having the honor to be one of the team’s captains while doing it. I feel proud of the bond that we have as a team, because we’re not only a team, but a family.

Coach Arno says … That we are a good team and that if we play our game and trust each other we can accomplish a lot. That makes me feel confident in my team and I and allows us to feel as if we can beat anybody if we just play like ourselves.

Sara Matthis thinks community journalism is important, but not serious; likes weird and wonderful children (she has two); and occasionally tortures herself with sprint-distance triathlons, but only if she has a good chance of beating her sister.
