On April 12-13, the girls and boys tennis players from MHS went on a quick overnight trip to Miami where they played in their district matches at the Crandon Park Tennis Center.
The girls competed early Monday morning against five other teams from the district. The girls didn’t come home with any wins, but collectively agreed that they had played some of their best matches against the hardest opponents.
“Lilian (Guo) has possibly played one of the best matches of her season,” said Coach Richard Lorenzo of the team’s top ranked girl player. She finished with a (6-8) score.
The senior boys were all glad they were able to attend one last trip as a team before concluding the season. Doubles partners Mathias Trujillo and Patrick Crews also stood their ground as they finished strong with a score of (8-5).
The year was cut short for senior Celine Ponzoa, who suffered some minor injuries that left her out for the remainder of the season, but who nevertheless was able to travel to districts as a spectator.
“This year had lots of potential; we had many new team members who came out and worked their butt off,” said Ponzoa, who has been on the team for three years. “Everyone remained optimistic regardless of the challenges they faced on the court as well as the precautions we were attentive to because of Covid-19.”
Freshman Marquisha Abraham says about her team, “My teammates and I have all done a terrific job of keeping everyone’s spirits up, we showed a lot of team spirit. Everyone encouraged everyone, regardless of who you were and what grade you were in. We truly all became a team who was a family, a family full of jokes. I am really looking forward to next year.”
