Once again, Marathon’s Suzy Curry will be joining the Castaways as they paddle from Miami to Key West. Now in its 19th year, the Castaways team has raised almost $1 million to support cancer research. Yes, $1 million. At presstime, they are short only about $10,000 from the goal. Oh, and they’ve added up the miles, and it’s almost 3,000. “That means we’ve paddled the same distance as across the U.S.,” said team leader Patrick Linfors. The idea for the paddle was conceived by Steve O’Brien, who sought to “light a candle rather than curse the darkness,” after losing, in quick succession, his mother and grandmother to cancer. The team — 17 people strong — takes off on Friday, June 9 from Miami and arrives in Key West on Friday, June 15 with stops along the way like Grassy Key and Bahia Honda.
