Sounds of student chatter filled the halls of the Upper Keys schools, as teachers awaited their pupils for the first day on Aug. 12. The day before, students were able to say “hi” to teachers and staff, while finding their classrooms and sorting out other needs during meet-the-teacher events. At Coral Shores High School, seniors and their families celebrated what would be their final first day of class. Parents holding signs savored the moment as the seniors gathered for a group photo before walking into the school. On the road, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies ensured that motorists were maintaining the school-zone speed limit of 20 mph. Islamorada firefighters posted just outside the school zone to remind drivers to go slow.
And with that, another school year is underway.
