Under a cloudy break from the brutal summer sun, young skippers caught the wind in the waters off Marathon on July 11 for the Middle Keys Sailing’s annual Mixer in the Middle Regatta.
Featuring sailors ages 7 to 18 from Key Largo to Key West, the day’s races invited four classes of sailboats to navigate their way through the shallow Gulfside course, under the watchful eyes of their coaches and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Sailors and their families later retired to the Marathon Yacht Club for a post-race pool party and awards ceremony.
Proceeds from the regatta support the efforts of the Marathon Yacht Club Educational Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to teaching fun and safety on the water for kids of all backgrounds. Middle Keys Sailing provides youth and adult sailing lessons, summer camps and scholarships for graduating Marathon High School seniors, along with various events throughout the year.
