Stanley Switlik Elementary School fifth-graders put their wordsmithing skills to the test as they got a taste of the news media industry during the school’s annual Career and Truck Day on April 11. Teaming up with dozens of other businesses, nonprofits and agencies from the Middle Keys community, the Weekly was just one stop in a morning of rotating workshops for kids to explore the professions that make a community run. After discussing the importance of local media and the difference between facts and opinions in reporting – understood better by fifth-graders than most “grown-ups” – each group had the chance to play photographer and reporter, taking and captioning photos for this week’s edition.
