On the morning of Sept. 9, 2,977 American flags fluttered on the front lawn in front of Marathon High School. Each flag was placed the day before by a middle or high school student to remember those who lost their lives in the horrific attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The following day, the school hosted a memorial ceremony, spearheaded by MHS senior Billy Martin along with the school’s Student Government Association and Champions for Change club. The event included a presentation of the colors by members of the U.S. Coast Guard and a rendition of “God Bless America” played by the MHS band, bringing all in attendance together for a moment of solemn remembrance.
