ONLY IN KEY WEST: GRADUATES RIDE THE WAVES FOR DIPLOMAS

The Class of 2026 from Somerset Island Prep charter high school continued a seven-year tradition on May 22 by riding personal watercraft to collect their diplomas from Principal Tom Rompella. A proper ceremony also took place at Ocean Key Resort’s Sunset Pier. LARRY BLACKBURN/Keys Weekly

Somerset Island Prep charter high school held its seventh annual water-based graduation on May 22 off Ocean Key Resort.

Wearing life jackets under their graduation gowns, students throttled personal watercraft into their future and picked up their scrolls from Principal Tom Rompella. A proper ceremony with class speakers and awards also took place at the resort’s Sunset Pier.

The graduation tradition started during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the Class of 2020 was seeking a safe and socially distant graduation ceremony.

And now, seven years later, good luck telling any subsequent classes they have to sit in an auditorium — and stay dry.See all Florida Keys graduates and their senior portraits in the Keys Weekly’s annual Graduation Guide at keysweekly.com.
