Key Largo library is bringing the work of Ocean Studies Charter School students to the public during July.

“Mangroves: Over, Under and Around” depicts images photographed by students in grades 4-6. Each year, the school offers a yearlong photography program to all students. They partner with volunteer photography professionals in order to teach them how to use the camera for functionality and environmental change.

In the course of a few months, students learn the basics and each class has a collection of images to be proud of.

This year’s focus subject was Florida Keys mangroves. Photos are the products of fourth and fifth grade “Sharks” and sixth grade “Sailfish” classes. Images were captured between March and May on school field labs at locations in the Middle to Upper Keys.

The purchase of rugged, waterproof digital cameras was made possible by a generous grant from the Key Largo Sunset Rotary Club. Photographers David Gross and Dr. Jim Doran guided and inspired the Shark and Sailfish classes through theory, practical application and photo editing.

Ocean Studies Charter School in Key Largo is an A-rated, free public charter school that serves students K-6 and delivers a marine science curriculum.
