consequences of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. Police lights and a demolished car took up residence on the front lawn of MHS on the morning of April 23 to simulate a drunk driving crash as part of the Educational Coalition for Monroe County and Champions for Change’s annual Safe and Sober Prom event. As MHS Fire Academy students worked with Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Highway Patrol and Marathon Fire Rescue personnel to extract the student “victims” from the damaged vehicle, Marathon Fire Inspector Mike Card addressed the gathered students and staff, reminding them of the realities that can occur with poor decision making on prom night.

Tuesday morning’s demonstration was made possible by personnel from Marathon Fire Rescue, MCSO, Florida Highway Patrol and MHS Fire Academy students in partnership with Champions for Change.

Alex Rickert made the perfectly natural career progression from dolphin trainer to newspaper editor in 2021 after freelancing for Keys Weekly while working full time at Dolphin Research Center.
