Mexican-inspired celebrations are becoming increasingly popular in the United States, and the Día de los Muertos celebration slated for Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Florida Keys Brewing Co. is proof positive.

For the sixth year in a row, Community Arts and Culture (CAC) is presenting live music, workshops and celebratory activities for families to enjoy.

Mariachi Veracruzano will once again take over the beer garden for a lively performance of traditional music, and this year, event attendees can take ukulele lessons beforehand to join the band on the traditional song “Cielito Lindo.” Other activities include traditional sugar skull and corn husk headdress-making workshops, face-painting, a cakewalk and a community altar for those who wish to honor their dearly departed.

“It is truly inspiring to see how the South Florida community has continued to embrace these events,” said Jose Elias, CAC’s founder and executive director. “We invite everyone to come share in the fun and tradition and enjoy a full day of family-friendly activities and fun. Our thanks go to sponsors the Monroe County Tourism Development Council, Cosmo Tires, and the FKBC for their continued support.”

Starting at 1 p.m., participants will be able to take part in a Fandango ukulele workshop where they can learn basic skills. They can also explore indigenous craftsmanship by creating a cornhusk headdress, inspired by traditional designs that honor the ancestral connection between culture and the land.

Attendees can also make sugar skulls, a tradition during Día de los Muertos, honoring ancestral memories. There will also be a tree of life that will give attendees a chance to hang a photo of a loved one as part of a community altar.

Attendance is free and open to the public; workshops are ticketed. The Tacos Jalisco food truck will be on hand selling Mexican delicacies.
