A boy is recovering at a Miami hospital after law enforcement said he was bitten by a shark off Key Largo on Sept. 1.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s office, the 8-year-old boy was snorkeling on the oceanside off Key Largo when he was reportedly bitten at 3:24 p.m. A local commercial diving vessel was nearby and rendered aid to the boy by applying a tourniquet.

The boy was brought to shore and airlifted via Trauma Star to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami where medical staff immediately brought him in for surgery. The boy was bit in the leg, according to Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay.

“Last I heard he’s doing better and made it through surgery. He still has his leg which is great. We were worried about his leg.”

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission were notified of the incident.
