Key West Police Department reported the following about an incident that occurred Wednesday morning:

On Wednesday, May 12, 2021, Key West Police received information about a teen who had a gun in his waistband when he boarded the school bus on Cudjoe Key Wednesday morning.

When the bus arrived at Key West High School, the student got off the bus and walked off campus.

The teen attends Somerset Island Prep, a charter high school less than a block from Key West High School. (The same school bus is used by students attending both schools.)

The teen skipped school on Wednesday and was found by police at 9:08 a.m. walking in the 1600 block of Atlantic Boulevard near the nature preserve trails.

During the investigation, multiple schools in the city of Key West were placed on lockdown for the safety of students and faculty.

Detectives arrested the teen Wednesday morning for possessing a weapon on school property and disrupting multiple educational institutions in Key West.

The student was transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice and the investigation is ongoing.

Police have not released the student’s name, as he is a juvenile.

Keys Weekly will continue to update this story as the investigation continues.
