Dr. George Peterson has more than 30 years experience

Most moms in town know Dr. George Peterson because he delivers so many babies in Key West.

“Part of why I love my job is seeing a mother hold her child for the first time,” said Peterson, “but why I really love gynecology is because I am able to give immediate benefits to patients.”

Peterson’s gynecology expertise goes beyond delivering newborns. He was the first general gynecologist in South Florida to receive extended training on using a surgical instrument called the “single site da Vinci,” one of the least invasive surgery methods which is performed through the belly button — something he practices at the Lower Keys Medical Center.

“It generally takes six months to recover from a hysterectomy with open surgery, but less four weeks with the da Vinci. There are fewer complications, a shorter hospital stay and less bleeding — only tiny incisions in belly.” Peterson said.

The da Vinci system features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and tiny “wristed” instruments that bend and rotate better than the human version. As a result, the da Vinci enables the surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control. “There are no human hands operating on a patient,” Peterson said.

Peterson’s demeanor is extremely laid back. He often jokes with patients and makes them feel comfortable because his concern for their wellbeing is sincere. Dr. Peterson and his patients often share a lifelong bond.

“Dr. Peterson is a great doctor to work with, as well as a great doctor to have,” said RN, CNOR and RNFA Kari Wells.

When not in the operating room, Peterson is with his family or on the racetrack with his stripped-down Porsche he turned into a speed machine. To find out more or schedule a visit go to obgynofthekeys.com or call 305-293-9555.
