The Historic Preservation Society of the Upper Keys’ Monday, Jan. 13 presentation will be provided by Malachi Fenn, archaeologist with the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) at 7 p.m. at Coral Isles Church. The presentation “Who Made the Everglades” will explore the geological and cultural history of the Everglades and look at the role of early Native Americans and initial tree island formations.
Because FPAN is dedicated to the protection of cultural resources, both on land and underwater, FPAN staff regularly provide training and presentations that involve the public. The intent is to engender a shared interest in protecting resources while increasing awareness for the community.
Before becoming a public archaeology coordinator for FPAN’s Southeast Region, Fenn worked on cultural resource management and museum projects throughout South Florida. A lifelong visual artist, Fenn has provided archaeological illustrations for numerous publications. Their specializations include Pre-Hispanic Maya archaeology and epigraphy, Florida pre-colonial and historical archaeology, museum collections care, and scientific illustration.
