Flags are again flying proudly in front of Marathon’s American Legion Post 154 following a long-overdue restoration of its flagpole. First erected in the 1960s, the pole withstood several natural tests, including 2017’s Hurricane Irma, before American Legion members gave it a short rest for some TLC. With a total of 126 hours invested in the project, workers sanded and repainted the pole with a new red, white and blue color scheme in addition to strengthening and replacing damaged portions. The newly refurbished pole was raised once more on Aug. 20 thanks to a crane donated by Marathon Electric Sign & Light.
