KEYS WEEKLY SALUTES OUR LOCAL SERVICE MEMBERS

We at Keys Weekly want to honor the men and women serving in our local military installations. With help and advice from our community members in the armed forces, we’re proud to present our Military Spotlight.

WILLIAM T. ROWLAND
Information specialist, U.S. Coast Guard/JIATF-South

Why did you join the military? As a kid 9/11 really impacted me. As soon as I was able, I joined the U.S. Army, which happened to be during my senior year of high school in 2009. After many years in the Army I joined the U.S. Coast Guard to continue my service. Best decision I ever made.

How many years have you been in the military? All in all about 10 years. I intend to be in for a few dozen more. I want to become Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard.

Had you ever been to the Florida Keys or Key West before your current assignment? I went on a couple of field trips to Key Largo while in school, and quickly realized the Keys are a very special place.

Did you choose Key West or were you just assigned here? I chose here. I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to serve and live in Key West. Not only is the mission at Joint Interagency Task Force-South extraordinary, I love being in Key West. The people here are amazing and there is always something to do.

What were your first thoughts upon learning that you were coming to the Keys? I was so excited I immediately called my family. I grew up in a small coastal community in McClellanville, South Carolina, with only 400 or so people. So I knew it was right up my alley.

Hobbies? I am a dedicated martial artist and train in Brazilian jiu jitsu nearly nonstop at Bone Island MMA. I am also a lifelong waterman, so fishing, surfing, diving and just anything on the water are my passions. Salt water is in my blood.

Favorite things to do? I really enjoy and look forward to my Brazilian jiu jitsu training time. When I’m not doing that I’m usually at the beach, kayaking, fishing, or just exploring the Keys.

What do you like most about the Keys? I love Key West. The people, the food, the weather, the beaches … everything!

What do you like most about your assignment? I appreciate our mission. We focus on global counter-narcotics operations. We make differences every day that benefit the safety and wellbeing of future generations.

What would you change about living here in Key West if you had the power to do so? I would really push for enforcement of traffic violations for bicyclists. It really makes me nervous when folks speed through a busy intersection without stopping at stop signs, and darting in between traffic or cruising the wrong way down a tight one-way. Other than that, maybe free margaritas for everyone on Sundays?
