Military commanders, business owners, newspaper editors and other “celebrity guest readers” celebrated Literacy Week 2021 at Florida Keys schools by reading stories aloud to elementary students online and in-person.

The Florida Department of Education coordinates the event each year and encourages K-12 schools to create age-appropriate events to highlight the benefits of reading, writing, poetry and storytelling through online and real-life platforms.

This year’s statewide theme was “Humanity Tells a Story: What’s Your Chapter?”

Keys students dressed as the profession they’d like to be. They made food mentioned in books. They wrote poetry, updated their personal profiles and made reading recommendations to other students.
