No matter how many individuals appear in the pages of each edition of Keys Weekly, there are always so many more of our community members who deserve to be recognized. In an effort to shine a spotlight on more of the incredible individuals who live and work in these islands, Keys Weekly is proud to present our Neighbor of the Week feature, dedicated to celebrating a community member with each issue.
Our neighbor of the week is Demetrious Roach, who is a basketball trainer and mentor who develops youth athletes through skill work, character building and real‑game understanding. Through his program, Fundamentals Player Development and Training, he has earned widespread praise throughout the Keys, coaching many of the top hoopsters in Key West, Marathon and the Upper Keys. He is also a flooring cleaning specialist and provides rental sales at Sunbelt Rentals.

How long have you been in the Keys and what brought you here? I’ve been here since 2004. A carpet cleaning company franchise opportunity came my way, so I took it.
What’s a local business you couldn’t live without? Sweet Savannah’s of the Florida Keys.
Which living person do you most admire? My wife Charmel – she’s the best.
What is your favorite book, movie, or TV show right now? Book: “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” Movie: “The Dark Knight.” TV show: “Power.”
What is your greatest extravagance? Amazon orders.
What’s a talent you wish you had? I wish I could speak multiple languages.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why? I wouldn’t change a damn thing.
What is your most marked characteristic? Adaptability.
Who is one of your real-life heroes? Kobe Bryant.
What is your idea of perfect happiness? Happiness is a choice.
If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? I’m allergic to cats, so not them.
What’s a habit you’d love to break? Overcommitting myself.
What is your greatest regret? Not joining the military.
What is your current state of mind? To do Whatever It Takes To Succeed (W.I.T.T.S.)
What’s something you’re really proud of? My kids.
What do you most value in your friends? Their respect.
What’s a simple pleasure that brings you joy? Basketball.
What are your favorite & least favorite smells? Favorite: lavender. Least favorite: My son’s farts.
