Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies say a suspected man driving drunk and recklessly on U.S. 1 was captured after fleeing from the vehicle and jumping into the water.
According to an arrest report, 40-year-old Joshua Derek Guajardo, of Florida City, was reportedly driving reckless in a Chevy Tahoe and passing vehicles illegally near MM 65. Deputies caught up to Guajardo but he fled reaching speeds of 80 mph in a 55-mph zone. Deputies said Guajardo continued to drive erratically and nearly struck a patrol vehicle during the incident.
Spike strips were successfully deployed near MM 68 and MM 69. The Tahoe finally stopped near MM 70. Guajardo then fled on foot into the mangroves and water on the oceanside. Guajardo was observed with an object/possibly a firearm when he fled on foot, so U.S. 1 was temporarily closed in both directions until the scene was determined safe for motorists. There was no weapon immediately found.
Guajardo was taken into custody shortly thereafter. He was taken to jail and charged with DUI, fleeing and eluding and driving with a suspended license. More charges may be pending.
Helicopters and boats provided by the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations as well as officers and troopers from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Highway Patrol assisted in the incident.
