Snaps of a sunset with colorful clouds and a glass-like ocean aren’t the only ones that best capture the Florida Keys. The Keys Weekly’s photographers captured some breathtaking moments and joyful occasions around the community in 2023. 

KIDS SAIL AWAY

Keys Weekly freelancer Jacqueline Hale captured this young sailor competing on an Optimist boat during the 14th Buccaneer Blast Regatta in Key Largo in February.

Keys Weekly’s art columnist William DePaula not only had the chance to speak with photographer Felipe Correa about his abilities to capture a wild and magical natural environment, but DePaula was able to receive this amazing image from Correa of a Great White egret. 

MISS CORAL SHORES CROWNED

Keys Weekly’s Doug Finger snapped the moment when senior Leyla Ochoa received the Miss Coral Shores crown during the event’s 70th running on April 21.

100-DAY UNDERWATER STAY

Keys Weekly freelancer Zack Woltanski snapped this moment, when ex-Navy veteran and University of South Florida researcher Joseph Dituri surfaced from MarineLab’s Jules’ Lodge after successfully completing a 100-day stay beneath the depths.

Florida Keys News Bureau’s Andy Newman sent his drone high to grab a picture of Alligator Reef Lighthouse lit on the evening of Oct. 6.  

IGUANA TREE TOPPER

Local photographer Javier Exposito captured quite a moment during Light Up Key Largo’s tree lighting ceremony on Nov. 18. Atop the tree hung an iguana, serving as the unofficial topper. 

FIREWORKS ILLUMINATE FLORIDA BAY

Keys Weekly’s photographer David Gross sent his drone into the nighttime sky to capture the fireworks during the annual Key Largo Boat Parade.

Jim McCarthy is one of the many who escaped the snow and frigid temperatures in Western New York. A former crime & court reporter and city editor for two Western New York newspapers, Jim has been honing his craft since he graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 2014. In his 5-plus years in the Keys, Jim has enjoyed connecting with the community. Jim is past president of the Key Largo Sunset Rotary Club. When he's not working, he's busy chasing his son, Lucas, around the house and enjoying time with family.
